The Southern Shmooze — Privacy Policy for the mobile app
The Southern Shmooze is a free app for iPhone and Android that lists certified local service providers and helps you get matched with one. The app has no accounts and no login. This policy explains what it collects, why, and who it is shared with.
What you give us on purpose
The app only receives personal details when you type them into one of our forms.
- Find My Pro. Step one asks for the kind of work you need, your ZIP code, and optional notes about the job. Step one is saved as a partial request as soon as you continue, even if you never finish step two. Step two asks for your first and last name, email address, phone number, and whether you want our newsletter.
- Matching with a provider from the swipe deck. Your first and last name, email address, phone number, a budget range, and the details you write about the project.
- The contractor application. Your business name, your name, email address, phone number, website, the address and listing details of the Google business you select, your trade, years in business, license and insurance status, and the growth challenges you check off.
We use this to connect you with a provider, to follow up about your request, and — for applications — to evaluate whether a business is a fit for the registry. Where it goes depends on which form you used:
- Find My Pro requests and swipe-deck matches are stored in our database, hosted by Supabase in the United States, and a notification email goes to our team through Resend so a person can act on it.
- Contractor applications are not stored in that database. They are passed straight through to our application service, which runs on Cloudflare Workers, and are retained there and by the team who reviews them.
What the app records automatically
- An anonymous install identifier. The first time you open the app it generates a random ID and stores it on your device. It is not your name, email, phone number, or advertising ID.
- Usage analytics. Which screens you view and which actions you take — cards shown and swiped, a match made, a call button tapped, a registry search run. For searches we record the filters you chose and how many results came back. Our analytics provider is PostHog, Inc. (posthog.com), and the data is stored in the United States.
- A three-digit ZIP prefix. Where analytics needs to know the region, the app sends only the first three digits of the ZIP you typed, never the full code.
- Crash reports. When the app hits an error or stops working, we record what went wrong — the error message, where in the code it happened, and your app and operating-system version — so we can fix it. We do not collect your console logs.
- Technical data that any internet request carries, such as your device's IP address and operating system version, when the app loads listings, submits a request, or sends analytics.
Analytics is anonymous unless you complete a Find My Pro request or submit a contractor application. In those two cases the email address you typed becomes the identifier on your analytics record, and earlier activity from that device is joined to it. Requesting contact with a provider from the swipe deck does not identify you. Your name, phone number, and full ZIP code are never sent to analytics.
What we do not do
- We do not use advertising identifiers (IDFA) and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. That is why the app never shows you the "Allow tracking?" prompt.
- We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertising networks or data brokers.
- We do not record your screen or your session, and we do not collect precise or GPS location. The only location data we hold is the ZIP code you type.
- We do not access your camera, microphone, photos, contacts, or calendar.
When the app hands you off
Calling a provider opens your phone's dialer, and a provider's website or Google reviews open in your browser. Once you leave the app, the privacy practices of that company or service apply instead of this policy. We never see the content of a call.
Third-party services
- Supabase hosts the provider database and stores the requests and applications you submit.
- PostHog receives the usage analytics described above.
- Resend delivers the notification email that tells our team a new request arrived.
- Cloudflare runs the service that receives contractor applications and serves the registry data the app reads.
- Expo serves app updates. Checking for an update sends your IP address and app version to Expo's servers.
How long we keep things
Requests and applications are kept for as long as we are working with you or the business, and afterward as a record of the relationship. Analytics records are retained by PostHog under our project's retention settings. You can ask us to delete either — see below.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
Because we hold no account for you, deleting the app removes the on-device identifier, and any activity after that is anonymous again. To ask what we hold about you, to correct it, or to have it deleted, email us at the address below and tell us the email address or phone number you used in the form.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app collects, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change ships.
